How to Become An Efficient Grocery Shopper

Regardless of when you choose to grocery shop, I think it’s safe to say that grocery shopping can easily become a time-consuming chore. For some grocery shopping is not only time consuming but a confusing and somewhat overwhelming experience. This is especially true for those that are not confident with cooking or with knowing how to create healthy balanced meals. Today I’m going to talk with you about simple and easy ways you can become an efficient and confident grocery shopper while decreasing the amount of time you spend on your groceries so you can get back to taking care of other things.

Time-Saving Tricks

If you have been following along with my other posts you have heard me mention the importance of meal planning on more than one occasion and well here I am mentioning it again! I really can’t stress enough how much of a game changer this can be and how it can truly help you with your grocery shopping. Knowing what meals you’re seeking to prepare for the week ahead as well as when you’re looking to prepare them will help you decide what ingredients you need which will save you money. And, this will also help you choose your produce wisely so it doesn’t spoil or go bad. For more on the benefits of meal prepping I am going to link my last 2 vlogs/blogs discussing the importance of meal planning here where I explain a little bit more about this process and how it can work for you.

Having an inventory of commonly used items in your kitchen that you check on a regular basis will help you know what you need, how often you need it and set up a regular schedule for when you need to repurchase it. You can save yourself a headache and strife of forgetting something important or buying excess and going over your grocery budget. Some key items to include on your kitchen inventory are oils, sauces, condiments, spices, pasta, rice, frozen goods, canned goods, nuts, dog food,  and household supplies and cleaners.

Now that you know what meals you’re going to consume for the week, and have created a kitchen inventory of reusable supplies that you don’t need to purchase on a regular basis you can now focus on scheduling a day and time to purchase your groceries. Choosing a time that works with your lifestyle should be of key importance and you should try to find a day and time that you can commit to for a long period of time.  I also recommend for those that find the grocery shopping experience overwhelming to try and avoid getting groceries during peak times such as in the afternoon and early evening or on the weekends. Opt to schedule your grocery shopping visits during non-peak times such as in the morning or late evening or during the day, whatever works best with your lifestyle and schedule.

Alternative Grocery Shopping Methods

Applying the three simple tricks above can decrease a lot of stress and time spent in the grocery store. Especially deciding to go grocery shopping on days that are not as busy or crowded. But, now there is a rise in alternative ways to get groceries that are even more efficient for those that are tight on time or that just don’t want to go grocery shopping at all. Let’s explore a few of these options to see what could be right for you.

Many local grocery store chains provide grocery pick-up service. You simply go online and order the groceries your groceries from produce to household supplies, meat, and pet food, and a personal shopper will shop your grocery list for you and have them ready for you to pick up at your designated time. So you don’t have to worry about shopping the aisles all you have to do is pick up your goods and go.

Similar to how the grocery store pick-up option works there is also the delivery option. You can have your groceries delivered to your home during a designated time slot on the day of your choosing. This is even more efficient and timely and frees you up to do even more with your time.

This option is a great way to support local farmers in your area and get fresh produce and meat. These events are usually held over the weekend but can vary depending on location.

Another option is to have a meal delivery service deliver a box of fresh food to your home which you can cook these meals from scratch. These services provide a variety of healthy meals and recipes to choose from taking into mind a variety of dietary restrictions and preferences and can be used as a standalone to replace traditional grocery shopping or to supplement meals during the week.

The final alternative option is a meal prep delivery service that will prepare fresh healthy meals that can be adjusted to accommodate your dietary needs and specific tastes and preferences. If you find that you travel a lot for work or that you have an incredibly busy lifestyle that just isn’t permitting you to spend time in the kitchen you can use this service to ensure you are consuming balanced healthy meals without the need of having to prep and cook them yourself.

Regardless of which option you choose for you and your family, the emphasis should be placed on making an effort to consume whole, minimally processed foods that nourish the body and decrease nutrient deficiencies. Even with a busy demanding schedule, it is possible to achieve a healthy lifestyle that doesn’t require eating out or relying on overly processed food to satisfy your hunger. I hope these tricks and ideas to decrease your time spent grocery shopping are helpful and help you with your health and wellness!
